It never fails. Whenever I go to install software, it seems I *always* have problems. Maybe that is why I always put it off so long...
Anyway, I downloaded [communityserver_2_1_aspnet20.msi] with a date/time stamp of [2006-08-12 10:15:00 AM]. I decided to install on a local test machine before I tried to install on my hosted server at Server Intellect.
My test machine is running VMware on Windows 2003 Server x64 Standard Edition SP1 as a host and Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition SP1 as a guest operation system. I have a SQL Server running on both the host machine (we'll call it VMware) and the guest machine (we'll call it TestOS) and I have IIS running on TestOS
I created one and only one website on TestOS (let's call it TestWeb). I then started the installation of Community Server on TestOS. Everything went fine until I got to the "Create Community Server Database" screen at which point I get an Unhandled Exception no matter whether I tried to use VMWare or TestOS for the SQL Server, the name TestForum or CommunityServer for the database name, or Windows Authentication or SQL Authentication, in any combination.
The following is the error display given the default options (i.e. (local) server, CommunityServer or database name, and Windows Authentication):

Hi Mike,
Sorry for the delay. There is a bug using the MSI on a 64bit machine. We are still working on resolving it, but in the mean time, you should have better results using the web based installer.
Thanks,Scott

Mike,
I did a lot of testing in this with the CS 2.1 Windows MSI Installer. The latest version was successful on my W2K3 machine. Are you sure you're using the latest version?

Something else, did you consider using the Web installer version? It's really a piece of cake and I'll be happy to walk you through it if you're not familiar with it.
Let me know!
Dave
