What do I need to learn in order to build a site like Hive.net ?

So ive got a Community site up and running based on CommunityServer. Great. Now I want to change the default.aspx to look something like Hive.net. So a larger login box and then other boxes for active forums, recent blogs, recent photos etc, laid out in a similar style to the Hive. What do I need to...

I'm very happy to hear that a new skinning engine should be available to the CS community within, say, 4-6 months. Hopefully. In addition to the great suggestions that have been presented already, I'd like to offer the following as features that I would be very interested for the CS 2.2 release...

Disabling Date link (not commenting it out)
