At this point in time, I don't want to upgrade to 2008.5 BUT I do want to fetch users' avatars using the API. There was a bug with this feature and I understand that bug is fixed with this latest release.

Can I use the ugraded .dlls in my production installation ONLY......  which will hopefully hold the fix to the avatar issue, without doing a full upgrade?

I don't know if it would work or not, but I'd suspect not as there have been a number of changes to the way in which avatars are handled in CS2008.5  Even if it did work for avatars, you may well end up with errors with the REST API being unable to find methods for other functionality as there has been a fair amount of refactoring in CS2008.5

Trust me, DO NOT try to use the new web service DLLs with older releases, they simply will not work. They made some breaking changes that make the assemblies completely incompatible.
