We have tried disabling email in the admin panel (Administration > Settings > Email Settings) and it does not remove any email-dependent functions from the UI. Does anybody know what this setting actually does?
When emails are sent by CS, they are added to a queue, and a background taks sends them out (typically every 5 minutes). Turning off email simply stops that task from running.
It does also remove some settings from teh UI - e.g. you shouldn't be able to contact other users via email.
If you don't see the settings taking effect, give your website 15 minutes as it somestimes takes that long for changes of settings to make their way throught the cache to UI.
