Before putting CS2008 into production, I want to update a few internal sites first to make sure we can work out all the kinks in advance. (Already discovered that we need to redo the theme.  sigh)

The UpgradeNotes.txt file in the upgrade ZIP file has a rather oddly phrased final instruction:

13. Grant the filestorage folder in your Community Server directory Network Service rights.

It took me a while to figure out that what this should have said is, "Give the 'Network Service' user rights in the filestorage folder."  (Users have rights, not folders, and there is no such right as "Network Service.")

What's still not clear is exactly what rights are needed.  Surely it's something short of "Full Control"?

Thanks.

I've been running with "Modify" permissions, and I don't appear to hvae encountered any problems.

Thanks.

The problem is, it turns out that the "Modify" permission implicitly turns on everything except "Delete Subfolders and Files", "Change Permissions" and "Take Ownership".  Most of them make sense (it's difficult to imagine CS not needing read/write/delete) but does the Network Service user really need permission to "Traverse folder / Execute File"?  The last half of that one's a little scary.

Sorry to be so picky about this, but when we go to production, the IT folks are going to be asking me about the minimum permissions.  (And having been the IT staff at previous jobs, I don't blame them.)

"Traverse folder / Execute File"?

This should not be required, however, regarding this permission on files, Windows Help states: "Setting the Traverse Folder permission on a folder does not automatically set the Execute File permission on all files within that folder."

Hey Blair

I'm upgrading my 2007 com server to 2008 and it is talking about this issue with the filestorage folder, and I don't know what exactly I am to do about it... Do I just have to modify the folder permissions on the webserver for this?

what exactly did you do to solve this issue?

thanks, Kerry

That sounds like a good plan of action.  Make sure that the windows account running your website has at least "modify" permission on the filestorage folder and all subfolders.  If you're not exactly sure how to do this, you host should be able to help you with this.

Hey, stupid question but how does one remote into a webserver and run an exe file if you don't have access to the gui in this case a 2003 server?

Can it be done via FTP or?

thanks, Kerry

As I recall, all I did was to grant modify permissions in that folder (and sub-folders) to the "Network Service" account.  It seems to have worked, though admittedly, CS has taken a lower priority the past few weeks relative to some other projects.  But that does seem to have done the trick.

That may be something you'll have to get your host to help you with.  I'm not aware of a way to run arbitrary commands via FTP.  If you have access to a command prompt (via Telnet or SSH) you may be able to do something, but I'm a bit out of date on what's available from the command line any more.

Most likely you should talk to your hosting company.

fyi...I'm also posting this:

Hey

My webhoster is godaddy.com and I am getting the run around as I need access to the server to run this upgrader application but unless I pay $43/month for a virtual server, I don't have access to run this app unless there's a way to run it via FTP and I don't think there is.

Godaddy says there's some upgrade script that I run. The tech support person I'm talking with I believe is lying to me as she can't tell me how to run a script of any kind from my ftp/web server root. I don't believe you can (it's a windows server) unless you remotedesktop it or console in or telnet in somehow...

Nice, they just hung up on me...I asked this tech support girl how to install/upgrade community server via scripts and she said it wasn't her job so I asked her for her manager because last I checked I was her customer and paid for them to host me AND community server. I told her that hosting community server also means that someone does the upgrades to it and I wasn't told it couldn't be me nor was I told there were extra charges for it...so she said she was getting her manager but they hung up on me after a while.

So unless I'm really missing something, I need to console/remote into this server and "run" this upgrader exe, right?

Anybody know any good hosters out there for a good price?

frustrated--Kerry
