Could not get the Desktop installation to work at all and I have total permissions/control of my desktop... the pre-configuration stage had to be accomplished first and this is not discussed in this install version... so you waste a ton of time and have a failed install...

This product should be a lot less 'GEEK' and a lot more general web user friendly to sell more product! I have a number one search engine website with the big four search engines and need a simple Windows Based Forum solution that works... this was supposed to be the ticket! I have tried for months to get it going but to no avail!

Why is the Web Installation instruction set for CS2008 so vague? A lot of installation errors could be solved and much happier folks trying to use CS2008 if this installed more easily... it is a pain in the rear!

The installation instructions for a Web Installation:

3. FTP the files in the local directory to your Web directory on your host's Web server. (Out of order instructions... you cannot FTP until you know to what directory, the directory's name and where you are placing the folders!)

4. Copy files. Ensure all web files for Community Server have been copied to the proper directory on your web server.

(What is the PROPER directory? Do you have to FTP the entire CS2008_4.0.30417.1769.web folder created from the zip file to your web server or can you rename the folder and place the folder contents into whatever folder you are going to use for your forum location?)

5. My web server --- provider: Network Solutions laughed at this line included in the instructions and said that they could not help in configuration of the folders!!!

These settings should already be configured for you by your host (ISP). If they are not, you will need to contact your ISP to apply these settings or your Community Server installation may not function properly. (It did not work and the installation fails!!! For the fifth time)

(I am really trying to test this product and get it to work but have been more confused by the lack of Language Packs and the lack of answers to base queries in installation from several posts on this forum... I am wasting too much valuable time trying to get answers on pre-installation issues instead of working on the forum itself!!!)

So what now do I give up?

I am having the same problem with this as well.

Wish there is a easier way to have this done.

I have an MCSE & IE and this is way too difficult for the uninitiated to install and seems to be that you have to pay Telligent to get it running on a hosted shared server web platform... this really stinks! I want to test the software for functionality and ease of use for sub-moderators before buying a $5000 program that is from what I see very slow. I wait 35-50 seconds to simply post on this forum... as an example... this will cause duplicate postings like crazy on a forum where we have some 2000 unique visitors and some 20,000 page views a day to our website!!!

From the database configuration side it appears that everyone should be told to go and do all of this first to create their database set up and properly configure before you even download CS~ whatever:

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express also needs to be downloaded but you must meet the 2.0 version .net requirements and version 3.1 is already loaded and functioning on my server:

  1. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition
  2. Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86)
  3. Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0
  4. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2
  5. SQL Server 2005 Samples and Sample Databases

Since it is "GEEKS" giving us instructions they omit these pieces of the puzzle to get this product to install and function properly if you can get your web hosting service to assist in the folder authorizations which is a total joke from one of the largest in the USA with Network Solutions!!! I have already sent in more than eight service tickets and spent more than thirty hours on the telephone trying to get them to follow the instructions in part 5 of the installation instructions but to no avail!!! I have not given up yet but this is the last chance! I have tried CS2.1, then CS2007 and basically got irritated because of the poor documentation for the install... (CS2008 installation instructions are just the CS2007 version and a joke ... as they send you to the Support Page to pay for instructions instead of giving you instructions to install! This is beginning to get humorous if it were not wasting so much time!) Someone at Intelligent needs to get their Webmaster to get the links correct and update the documentation!

We all need a simple click and install version of this product with the SQL databse created for us... an Action Script could do this fairly easily but does not seem to be a priority for the foreseeable future from what I can see in this forum. So what do we do to get this new product to be a quick, painless and easy installation.

Ask Telligent to make their product intelligent and to have a good set of instructions that are in the proper sequence with a series of "what if" scenarios to folow in the outline in case of failures for each step. Simplicity sells product is the key to success and one reason so many web forums do not use a Windows platform but opt for an APACHE platform running UNIX and a free forum software running on a different server! Make this much more simple, give quick assistance from queries and this product will gain users and sell product. Right now it appears to be changing versions too quickly to gain a foothold in an effort to raise capital by selling a different version each year... this will kill the product as 3 years is a basic standard in the software industry and allows for budgeting by companies for acquiral. Someone needs to read what customer's want and not what they as the company are trying to sell.

Get my CS2008 forum working with the language pack includes I need and I'll be glad to pay for the software but for now this needs to be a lot more simple and to locate the answers a lot more readily available on this website! We need help to make this product work and be successful!!! NO software product should not be released without the included support for at least an inclusion of the largest eight languages spoken in the world and this is a must but overlooked to date!!! I read about little widget needs and must say the BIG things are not being addressed at the outset:

1. Ease of installation and setup

2. Multi-Language support

3. Product Life Cycle

4. Ease and automation of upgrades

5. Speed & functionality for the user

These are my simple views but I need help to get this product installed after trying since Decemeber of 2007 to get it running as described above but to no avail. Many other less computer savvy have had to have given up on this product after a trial download and this is why the sell through rate must be particularly bad! Telligent, please listen to your future customer and help us to get this product installed to help you grow!

I have to say after a frustrating couple of weeks trying to get it installed (and I am one of those less knowledgable people you mention), I am glad to see I am not going crazy.

I too have to ask the question that if one of the leading community servers is this unresponsive and is so vague in installation, what is going on?

BUT it looks like it meets my needs...perhaps too much too fast?

maybe a little deeper before going wider?

I want it to work, but for now, am quite frustrated.
