I had this working in CS2007 but it looks like some of the controls used don't exist now. I'd appreciate any help with this. Also, I don't mean to sound rude but this is a functionality people have wanted since I started using CS 2.0, and here in 2008 we still have to code it in manually. :-/
Here is the code from my CS2007 UserWelcome.ascx:
<CSControl:UserData runat="server" LinkTo="UserPrivateMessages" UseAccessingUser="true"> <LeaderTemplate>| </LeaderTemplate> <ContentTemplate> Inbox <CSForum:ThreadList runat="server"> <QueryOverrides ForumID="0" UserFilter="All" UnReadOnly="true" PagerID="InboxPager" /> <ItemTemplate></ItemTemplate> </CSForum:ThreadList> <CSControl:Pager runat="server" ID="InboxPager" ShowPagerItems="false" ShowTotalSummary="true"> <TotalSummaryTemplate> <CSControl:PagerData runat="server" Property="TotalRecords" Text="({0})" /> </TotalSummaryTemplate> </CSControl:Pager> </ContentTemplate></CSControl:UserData>
Pre CS2008, Private messaging was done through a fairly hacked modificaiton of forums. In CS2008, PMs have been moved into their own application, however due to time constraints, they do not currently support read/unread status. I understand however this is being fixed for the next update to CS2008, although I'm not sure if that means SP1 or CS2008.1.

Thanks for the info. That is really too bad. What is worse, a hacked system that to the users, worked? Or a new system that doesn't do something very very basic to PM functionality? The "conversation" PM system seems clunky to me; almost like they forgot what private messaging is for.
So far I'm not exactly impressed with CS2008 and I don't enjoy saying that because I've always been a big fan of the product.
I continue to get complaints from people about this... There is simply no way to reproduce this missing functionality?
Not to beat a dead horse, but I also get complaints about this. Would really like to see this added.

Yet another half finished feature then
Seperating the PMs into their own table was probably the biggest incentive for us to upgrade uk-mkivs to CS2008, we had previously used code like in the first post but had to remove it due to performance problems. Showing if the user has unread PMs should be part of the core CS install, all other forum software has it.

Honestly, I don't mean to necro post here, but this is *still* a problem.

It's been added in CS2008.1 which is due in a couple of months
