Im trying to install the free edition of Community Server 2007 onto a server running SQL server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 32bit.
I have tried several times to install it and I keep getting the same errors. It tells me "Error talking to IIS"
I have IIS running and have asp and asp.net websites running on the server. I looked at the .net folder and it looks like .NET 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 are installed.
What might I want to look into for this?
I'm not sure of how to do this on Windows Server 208 but I do on vista and since they both share the same codebase for IIS, hopefully the vista instructions should push you in the right direction.
Server 2008 and vista introduced IIS7 which is an overhaul of IIS. Part of this was to remove the IIS Metabase which was the source of all sorts of problems in the past. CS however expects to talk to the metabase in order to install but since there is no metabase in IIS7, the two aren't going to talk. In order to get the two to talk, on Vista You have to install the IIS Metabase and IIS 6 configuration compatibility part of IIS through Turn Windows features on or off (found in Internet Information Services > Web Management Tools > IIS 6 Management Compatibility > IIS Metabase and IIS6 configuration compatability).
I expect that you need to install that same compatibility pack on Server 2008 however you may well have to follow different steps to do so. If you're still having trouble installing with the MSI, try installing using the Web Installer instead, which you can get from http://get.communityserver.org/download/.

Tried that then IIS started complaining about the config files or something.
So I fixed it, installed server 2003 instead and now it installed smooth. Its for a school project so it was easier to change servers.
