We apologize for this taking so long, but we've finally published the licensing details for Community Server 2008.

Thanks, Rob

thx for your infos..

"Community Server 2008 Professional Edition will be available for $5,000/server and is perfect for smaller, less demanding social networking communities. "

Does that mean with this Licence I can setup as many sites as I want, but each of them has a restricted set of features and capabilities?

"Community Server core libraries"

What's the definition of this, which source is not included?

Intranet edition includes new Microsoft SharePoint integration:

Sound like a killer argument.. Smile

Will the SDK be available for people who purchase 2008 Professional? Some modifactions have to be made to the source, not just through to web services api for my needs.

Thanks,

Jon

I'm still looking to get an answer to the question I asked regarding existing licenses and groups:

With CS2008, users can create their own groups. Since groups have their own forum and some of us don't have unlimited licenses, is this feature essentially not available to us?

Hello,

that's quite a raise ... May I urge you to provide us with the (preliminary) feature comparison grid, incl. Express Edition.

Please also confirm if there will be a Beta2 (or even RTM) well before that April 15

Thank you,
Jim

Will the SDK still be available with the express edition ?

Professionnal edition seems to be licencied on a per server basis : so we can host as many websites as possible with 1 licence if the server used stays the same ?

Are there any details about Harvest?  The prepurchase dealine is approaching, and we'd like to evaluate it.

I am currently on Small Business license with unlimited Blog/Forums features. I want to upgrade to Profession license at $399. Will I keep the unlimited Blog/Forums features in the new license? Thanks.

Yes, the SDK will be available with the Express Edition. The Express Edition will also include the full web services (REST) stack which will be the preferred way to build/extend Community Server.

Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob,

CS 2008 looks great!  I am really looking forward to implemeting CS 2008 with my new website soon after launch.  I'll hopefully also be upgrading my existing community to use the new features.  The social netwotking stuff looks great.  I would appreciate it if you could answer the following:

In your announcement you say "customers that own licenses to the discontinued Personal Edition can pay $99/license to upgrade to a similar licensed version of Community Server 2008".  Are you going to place some restrictions on number of blogs / forums etc in this version?  What restrictions are you going to place on the Personal and Express and Small Business versions?

Please don't change anything...  It makes it VERY hard to plan new sites and upgrade existing ones to the new versions when these numbers change from year to year.

Can you please announce any changes to these limits ASAP so that I can begin my planning.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Hi Chris,

There is a good chance we are going to release another beta today -- it will knock your socks off :)

No, the CS 2008 Personal Edition license and CS 2008 Small Business licenses will be identical to the Personal Edition license / Small Business license we sold for CS 2007 (and have since discontinued).

Hope that helps!

Rob

Thanks, Rob

This is good info!  With the recent price increases for paid-for editions, I'd hate to see the application of CS for smaller sites become unfeasible.  I'd love:

  • a no-nonsense explanation of what you can and can't do w/ the Express Edition (from many different angles)
  • a clear explanation of when you know it's time to upgrade to a paid-for edition.
  • to be able to use Community Server Express Edition as a platform for building my own asp.net sites.  There's so many great things "in the box" that I love.  But I don't want to violate any license agreements to do this, obviously.
