Has anyone seen an enhancement to grab a thumbnail photo of each video during upload processing or to allow users to upload a thumbnail image?

Any tips or pointers are greatly appreciated!

Thx,

Dave Field

I've created a free module that does exactly what you're describing.  It uses FFmpeg to extract an image from the video.

You can get it for free here and you can ask questions or report problems with it here.

Thanks!

Have a look at EdgeConvert. It will convert all major video formats and produce thumbnails in the process, even AVI and its variants which ffmpeg doesn't support.

Hmm, interesting. The details on the web site are super lite though. Not knowing enough, or having any type of trial functionality available, it's impossible to make the jump to a purchase decision.

Will more details be made available soon regarding this? Maybe a video showing a walkthrough of the entire process, and how it integrates into CS? Also, does a license grant you updates for a period of time, or only for updates that relate to the CS 2008 module? What happens when CS 2009 becomes available?

Here are the installation instructions and some troubleshooting tips: http://www.busedge.com/videoconverter.aspx.

The license grants you updates for 1 year for the current major version of CS. So currently we are supporting all flavors of CS2008 if you upgrade from one version to the next. We are not supporting CS2009 by default.

There is a demo site set up at http://cs.busedge.com/media/ where you can see it installed. If you want to upload something there, just PM or email me directly and I'll send you a password.

Color me intrigued. Is there a demo or production CS2008 site somewhere that I can experience this tool in action?

Also, I didn't see any reference to thumbnails (the topic of this postWink). Does it provide in-line images to let users see frame one of the video (or some other user-configurable frame number)?

Yes it provides thumbnails, I posted but pending moderation, not sure why. There is a demo site at http://cs.busedge.com. Hope this doesn't go under moderation too.

Again, trying to avoid this post going to moderation, I'm posting in smaller bits... There are installation instructions here: http://www.busedge.com/videoconverter.aspx

Hmm, wonder why things are going to moderation.

Thanks for the info so far though! I didn't see any mention of what is driving the transcoding pipeline, if that function can be run on a different server, and how fast/efficient is it? Can multiple threads be running for encodes, and can custom resolutions and quality settings be set for the encoder?

If the pipeline has to remain on the main server that CS is running on, that could cause a lot of hurt in the long run.

The transcoding is being handled by Turbine Video Engine from Blue Pacific, included in the distribution that you get with EdgeConvert. With regards to the pipeline, the version of EdgeConvert advertised on our website is for synchronous transcoding, which means the user has to wait after the upload while the server processes and converts the video. We also offer an asynchronous version which costs more and is more of a custom solution than a pre-packaged one. If you are interested in that please contact me directly.
