we run community server in-house right now and we are looking to host all our website on www.brinkster.com.

Brinkster support SQL database and ASP,  but of course we can't run an installer,  we can simply copy up files and create databases, etc.

Is it possible for us to migrate community server like this or do we have to run the installer?

The other option is www.godaddy.com which has the ability to pre-install community server for you.    The quesiton on this option (if the 1st is not possible),  would it be possible to migrate our existing uses, posts, forums, etc,  all our settings up to that instance?  If so how?   Is there a simply command that can be run to export it and then a simple command to import?

thanks

I have not tried Brinkster.com yet. However, it's not necessary to run installer on the hosting. You can run on your local and update the database as well as move the file folder to the hosting environment.

For Godaddy, I suggest you should not use pre-install CS, instead you install a fresh CS. Because Godaddy does not allow you to restore a database that was backup outside it's environment so you have to move the database to the hosting manually. It takes you a lot of time but I did it successfully.

great info!  Thanks.

So I have it installed and running now,  are you saying I could just copy up all my directory files to brinkster/godaddy,  get the DB configured and I am up and running?   it doesnt need any registry values or anything like that?

Can you help me understand how I would do the database piece?

First of all, make sure that your site is running well on your local machine. For Brinker, after upload all file folders to the host you should try to backup cs database on local machine, upload to host anh try to restore on hosting environment. For Godaddy, you must create SQL Scipt file for CS database on your local machine and copy and paste the Script to the Query Analyse on Godaddy.

You need to update connectionstring.config file in the root of the web folder, consult instruction from your hosting.

I wil give this a try.   i guess I want to go with the latest and I see version 8.5 is out?   So best plan would be to upgrade our existing site to 8.5 and then copy up the files to the hosted site and load in the DB?

Any gotchas on the upgrade?
