We want to really highlight video in our site... but there are no thumbnails... (small images)... how do we get thumbnails of the movies to display?

Search here, there should be something about it. It's difficult to do, since you'd need the Video Decoders installed on the server to decode the video file, and then pick out a video file. Difficult to say the least

You can use EdgeConvert, it's an addon for CS2008. It will convert your videos to FLV format and create thumbnails, and also populate the duration. Details here: http://www.busedge.com/edgeconvert.aspx.

it does not seem it will address my issues of displaying other types of videos only chagning them upon upload. Is there other features i didnt see?
EdgeConvert will convert your videos to standard FLV format thereby creating a homogenous environment. If you want to maintain the source video format and have a mix of video files stored on your server, and be able to pull thumbnails from all the different types, then you would need something like Jockersoft. We used to use this a while back but then we made EdgeConvert and we use that now. Here is the link for the Jockersoft code: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/graphics/ExtractVideoFrames.aspx. You would need to attach to the CS upload process so that you could grab a handle to the file and generate the thumbnail, then write some custom code to display the thumbnails on the gallery pages.

Nope, that's pretty much what it does. If you want to keep your videos in their source format instead of converting them to flash video, you may want to look here: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/graphics/ExtractVideoFrames.aspx. We used this a while back and it works fairly well.
