Recently we have had Community Server downtime because we have hit our SQL size limit with our ISP and have had to keep increasing it almost on a monthly basis. We feel that we must review the situation and in doing so have come up with some questions which I hope I can get some answers too as follows:-

  • How do you delete items permanently from the "Deleted Posts" forum ?
  • When a member has an attachment or picture is it stored on the SQL database or elsewhere ? and is this selectable by admin, if so how ?
  • Can we archive threads which are say 6 months old to a read only forum not using the SQL database ?
  • How can admin monitor/control how many "Private mails" a user has. Can a limit be set ?
  • How can we monitor the size of the Community Server database ?

The bottomline to my questions all really relate to what I would call system housekeeping. I have not found (yet anyway) any documents on this subject, if there are any perhaps you can point me to them please.

Regards

Have a look at http://dbvt.com/blog/archive/2007/01/27/on-community-server-database-shrinkage.aspx for a guide on shrinking your database.  The post includes a sample script which you can use but I advise against using it straight away without understandign what it is actually doing.  I also advise backing up your database before doing any work on it.

Photos and Attatchments may be stored in the Database depending on your set up - if you've left it as defult, then they will be -http://dev.communityserver.com/forums/p/487137/578458.aspx should provide a bit more information on that
