I'm new to Community Server and evaluating this tool for my company. I'm wondering if someone can explain the meaning of some of the visual ques that are used in the discussion lists. For example, what is the difference between a post that has a pencil image and one that has a star? Also, what does it mean when a post has a red question vs a green check vs nothing?
Posts with a pencil are normal posts, Posts with stars are popular posts. You can adjust the settings for what is a popular post and what isn't in the control Panel under Forum Administration.
As for the red question vs green check, that is an icon to indicate whether a post is answered or not. When you create a forum, (assumign you're using a comercial licence), you can enable "Thread Tracking". This means that when users make a thread, they can mark it as a question and if a post answers their question, they can use the Mark as Answer button that appears to mark their thread as answered.

Thanks. That is helpful. I notice that all replies appear at the end of a message, even if you reply to a specific reply. Hence the hierarchy of posts are all linear. Is that customizable? Do you find that users are confused by this method of handling posts?
I've never found users confused by this behaviour. If you do want to see posts in a hearachy, you can always use threaded view. This is not supported by the Hawaii theme but if you change to the Calypso or Hawaii theme, you should be able to use it.
In threaded view, posts are displayed in a treeview on the left of the page, and the selected post is displayed in the right hand section of the page - what I'm saying will make more sense if you use threaded view.
Great. Thanks again. This is very helpful.
