Hello,

We are actively considering using Community Server. We wanted to know whether Community Server supports multiple databases working behind one community server installation. The reason for this requirement is that in case the load exceeds what one sql server can handle, then is it possible to share the load by having several sql servers running behind one community server installation and maybe syncing up using replication of some sort.

 Thanks

I'm not aware of any intrinsic support for multiple databases, but I'm curious about how much traffic you are expecting.  I think you would need a very large volume of traffic to require multiple back-end databases.  I'm interested to know if Telligent runs this site on multiple database servers or some other configuration.

It would take a significant development effort, but I bet the Community Server database could be refactored to run on a federated SQL Server cluster.  Does Telligent have an enterprise solution for this?

manmeet_s_d,

I would  be very interested in what traffic patterns you would be expecting.  We have some very large clients that have multiple web servers, but with a single database server.  On our largest clients, it is typical to have SQL Server 64bit with 16GB of ram on a 4 proc box.  This is more than sufficient to handle requests far exceeding 60 Requests/Sec.

Thanks,

Hi David,

Thanks for your response. I am tasked with finding out ways by which we can build a community site which can scale to any forseeable load. So this means basically as long as we can throw in more web servers and database servers, the solution should essentially scale to any load.

We definitely know that we can throw in more web servers and have a web farm to handle the incoming requests but were getting concerned about the fact that the SQL Server may not scale beyond a certain point. Lets take the case where for example, i want CS to handle 4000 requests/sec. I want to see how we can end up scaling to such numbers and beyond.

It would be definitely useful to get your opinion on whether CS can be deployed/customized in a way to make such a scenario possible. We are definitely interested in CS and want to see if it can be scaled up to meet our forseeable requirements.

Regards

Hi David,
I was really hoping to see a response to this; I've been scouring the forums for "distributed database" and "multiple database" to no avail. Throwing more processors and ram into a box is not a viable solution, and far from a good one. Seeing the MySpace use the Community Server engine makes me severly doubt that its running on a single box. That and it was mentioned "heavy optimization ... deployed across their vast server farm to support this level of load". Are any of these features visible in Community Server 2008? or in the Enterprise Edition? Thanks
