I see a lot of news about the theming extravaganza and I see a lot of themes available for download, but nowhere do I see any mention of how to install these themes.

I eventually began to understand that you should simply have to extract the theme into a folder under Web\Themes and then select the new theme in the control panel. Unfortunately, that does not work for me (running on latest CS2007 bits). Any ideas why?

BTW, did the CS site loose all data for post history and profiles with the upgrade to CS2007? In my own profile it shows no prior posts. Also, my avatar was lost. And the author of a theme who included this link to his profile apparently has no profile anymore:

However, at the moment all I want to know is how to install a new theme. Thanks.

Hi,

To install the themes from the competition:

  1. download and unzip the file to your Theme directory or blog directory
  2. Go to your CS site Control Panel
  3. Go to Administration > Settings > Theme Configurations
  4. Think most of them use "Default" theme as a starting point, so you can select "Default"
  5. At the bottom of the page, there's an "Import" button, click on that and browse to find the xml file of the new theme

The above steps worked for me, hope it works for you too! Smile

Which themes did you try?

Most of the themes I downloaded don't have an xml file. The few that do seem to be missing the SiteFiles folder. For example, step 2 in the readme file for one of the themes I downloaded (that does have an xml file) says

2. Copy SiteFiles directory and its contents to the root of your CS2007 site.

There isn't a SiteFiles folder included with the theme (or any theme I looked at).

I tried the chocolate theme and the pink color theme, can't remember the name. I tried the one with white and orange color theme too. The xml files are normally named as themename.xml. Maybe what the creator mean by "SiteFiles" directory is whatever is included in the zip file?

I have to agree here; I've download about a half-dozen themes. The .ZIP files only contain a single file without an extension. That file isn't an .XML file (as adding .xml doesn't allow any XML parser to read the file). All of the instructions I've seen here for installing themes on CS 2007 are invalid.

Can someone please chime in with some accurate instructions?

Cheers,
Gregory

Can you provide a link to the theme you downloaded?

Sure thing...

At first I was trying to get Stromboli http://themes.communityserver.org/files/folders/track_2/entry135.aspx

Then... CSTeam - http://themes.communityserver.org/files/folders/employees/entry92.aspx

And out of desperation I tried just some random others; all with teh same results like Snow Flakes: http://themes.communityserver.org/files/folders/employees/entry112.aspx

I'm using WinRar to open the .zip's.

That single extensionless file is just a folder.  E.g. for the Stromboli theme, there is a grafxtime folder, and in that is the stromboli theme, and instlation instructions.

If you are unable to read that, then I would suggest you need to use another program to open thezip folder.

Thanks for the reply!

Even WinZip is not recognizing the .zip files as being valid. What software might you reccomend?

Would I be correct in assuming that you downloaded the zip file with Internet Explorer?  If so, try using another browser to download the file.
