I have 30gb of photos already organized within file directories by YYYY/MM/yyyy-mm-eventname and would love to modify the gallery to import all these photos but keep the originals exactly where they are, while creating galleries and sub galleries based on the directory names.
Do I have to make a completely custom app or can I modify the gallery to do this? Has anyone attempted something similar?

Did you ever find a solution to this? I would like to do the same thing. Does anyone have an existing solution for this, or will I need to write it myself?

This really would be nice... Unfortunately I haven't found a way. I've been manually Importing photos with the photo importer. You have to create each album manually so it's quite painful.
