The latest, easy way to configure a single blog/gallery is using URL remapping rather than manipulating CS's URL rewriting.  Download it and check it out.  It works quite well.  I am using it on my own site.  Configuration is the same no matter if you want a single blog at /blog or in root, a single gallery anywhere, or anything else.  Zero complications as a result of putting your blog/gallery in the root.  Go into some more detail on how its configuration works in one of my pervious posts at http://qgyen.net/archive/2006/01/09/1196.aspx.
